Stretching across two continents, Russia is the largest country in the world by surface area. Bordering Eastern Europe on one side, and the US on the other, the size and scale of the country is frightening! Russia is an impressive country with many unique customs, traditions and fascinating cities to visit, especially Moscow and St Petersburg. Covering over 170 million km2 and with a population of over 140 million people, Russia is a country that has emerged from the shadows of the former USSR, with its sheer size offering the visitor one of the most varied countries in the world, starting off in Europe and ending in Asia. Along the way the country borders Norway, Finland, Azerbaijan, China and the United States. Whilst Russia doesnt have many typical summer beachs accompanied by hot weather, due to the large part of the country being situated in northern latitudes, it does offer fantastic lakes, interior seas (Black Sea and the Caspian Sea), the transiberian express, hospitable hosts and lots of vodka.
The history of Russia is one of the most extensive and important that you will find in Europe. During the 20th century Russia experienced the fall of the Tzars, the dissapearance of the Communist USSR state which engaged in the Cold War with the United States during various decades.
If you decide to visit Russia, it is highly recommended, if you have time, to travel across the country on the famous Transiberian Express, starting in Moscow and passing by the magnificient Siberian Baikal lake before eventually winding into Vladivostok. A once in a lifetime experience, it is also possible to take in Mongolia and China en route.
Moscow too with its famous Red Square, Kremlin and St Basil Cathedral is a fantastic city to visit, along with St Petersburg.
